Even if I had to deal with the White Sox announcers, it was good to see the Royals play again. And with an actual win on opening day!
(To be fair, Ken Harrelson and Steve Stone are plenty objective, and the vast majority of their audience is pulling for the ChiSox. So of course they are "homers." They had plenty of kudos for the home team on Monday.)
Harrelson had an interesting comment after Mike Moustakas' home run. "It's easier to hit home runs when you're not trying to hit home runs." I don't want Moustakas to beat the shift by bunting down the third base line every at-bat, because no one bunts the ball 400 feet.
Harrelson sees Jeff Samardzija as a pitcher willing to plunk two hitters for every teammate hit by a pitch. I was glad the Royals beat him up in the way they did.
Any thinking baseball fan knows it's unrealistic to expect a team to score 10 runs a game. But the balance Kansas City showed offensively was nice to see. And yeah, it was nice to have a bit of a laugher to open the season, even though the Royals didn't put the Sox away until two were out in the seventh.
Comment from the Cards-Cubs opener: How can any big league pitcher not throw to first base for was is nearly two full seasons, much less someone making "staff ace" dinero? No wonder the Royals were able to steal three bases off Jon Lester in last year's wild card game. And no wonder the Cubs went out and got David Ross to be Lester's personal catcher. Ross can still toss, even at his baseball-advanced age of 37.
And the Yankees lost; that's always a good thing.
And now, on to the second games of the season!
